Abstract

This thesis analyses how the changes in landownership in the Byzantine Empire shaped the revolts we see during the tenth and eleventh century, taking into account both the changing positions of peasants and landlords. Instead of understanding these revolts as part of a larger narrative, as we have seen in the historiography, it is my intention to analyse them in their own right, with regards to their own dynamics and specificities. In this research, revolts are analysed as an expression of class struggle. This will hopefully help us to gain a better understanding of the relations of different social groups participating in revolts, as well as get a sense of why these different groups were breaking out in revolt in the first place. Class, as both a social and economic category, allows us to make a concrete connection between the economic changes and the social unrest of this period.
