Abstract

In my study, I investigate the impact of creative hubs on the identity of Nijmegen through three case studies. Municipalities promote and regulate creative hubs through creative hub policies, but these policies often have unintended adverse effects. Creative hub policies are frequently used as a tool in gentrification, which is consistent with my research. Two out of the three creative hubs that I studied have now disappeared. I aim to offer recommendations on how municipalities can perceive and manage creative hubs. My thesis includes a review of the literature and an analysis of secondary sources. Creative hubs contribute to a city's artistic, cultural, social, and economic value. However, when creative hubs are replaced by housing construction due to temporary hub policies, the artistic, cultural, and social values are often overlooked in favour of economic gain. Based on my findings, I conclude that municipalities should support local creative hubs and ensure their right to exist, given the widespread support for these spaces among various groups. Future research could explore contemporary creative hubs and further investigate the role of the current squatter movement.
