Abstract
Dutch main clauses have V2 word order, where another element in the sentence is traditionally seen as being topicalised to sentence-initial position. Recent corpus studies have found that speakers of Dutch tend to prefer SVO word order over other word orders. This study investigates whether SVO word order differs from other word V2 word orders in its use of topicalisation. This study used a multivalent grammaticality judgement task to assess the sensitivity to context of SVO and OVS word order in Dutch main clauses. Results showed that SVO word order was considered grammatical in all cases regardless of context, whereas OVS word order was seen as ungrammatical in all contexts. SVO word order appears to differ from OVS word order in their sensitivity to context, however the low number of participants and large deviations in the results between participants prevents any firm conclusions from being drawn.
