Abstract

This study presents an overview of a number of different theories regarding evidentiality marking in the Korean language. There is a wide variety in opinions regarding evidentiality in Korean, and the main goal of this study is to develop a single analysis that can account for the data used in the literature to support differing views. To do so, the presented theories are analysed so that discrepancies can be uncovered and taken into account. The results of the analyses suggest that the Korean morphemes are cumulative, and, in this case, express tense, aspect and possibly evidentiality. However, it could also be the case that Korean uses evidentiality strategies rather than using a closed system of grammatical forms. This is because imperfective aspect presents actions from an internal perspective, which could give rise to an evidential interpretation. Hence, the possibility that none of the mentioned morphemes mark evidentiality should not be ruled out.
