Abstract

Dutch Agriculture is highly productive and technological advanced. As a result, the Netherlands are the second biggest producer and exporter of agricultural products in dollar value. Even within this technological advanced process manual labour, which is often performed by migrant workers, remains essential. These workers often have to work under poor working conditions and face different other poor conditions as well. In this thesis I have conducted interviews with migrant workers, to find out how they experience their working conditions and give them a voice to talk about their situations. Besides describing how they experience their working conditions they also give information about how they can cope with these difficulties. In this regard, sensemaking proves to be of great importance as individuals use different techniques to make sense of their experienced situations. Important factors in this regard are 1) Monetary compensations, 2) Previous working experiences, 3) Social contacts and 4) The desire to live in the Netherlands
