Abstract

This thesis embodies a quantitative study on the relationship between cross-border acquisitions and the green innovation performance of acquirers located in a Member State of the European Union. This study also assesses the moderating effect of absorptive capacity and national cultural distance. Data on cross-border acquisitions and acquirers is retrieved from Zephyr, Orbis and Refinitiv Eikon. Data on green and non-green patents is retrieved from Orbis IP. The sample contains 147 cross-border acquisitions by acquirers spread over nine Member States of the European Union. The hypothesised relationships were tested through multiple linear regression analysis with acquirers from Germany as the reference group. The results indicate that, in comparison to Germany, cross-border acquisitions do not boost the green innovation performance of EU-based acquirers included in the analysis. In addition, a negative moderating effect was found for the national cultural distance between the acquiree and the acquirer. Results on the moderating effect of absorptive capacity of the acquirer could not be interpreted as the results were statistically insignificant.
