Abstract

Innovating insurance – a case study at a German insurance organization about the impact of organizational design on the creation and implementation of innovation The research is a qualitative case study, based on seven interviews with employees from a German insurance organization and from its co-location setting in which innovation projects are done. Aim of the exploratory case study is to find out which aspects of organizational design hinder or facilitate the creation and implementation of innovation respectively. The organizational design is analyzed by means of network design theory, the socio-technical system design approach and the MIOS, the model innovation and organisational structure. The co-location setting is found to be an ad-hoc temporary organization for the creation of specific innovation projects. Management involvement from the insurance organization’s managers hinders the creation of innovation within the co-location setting by restricting the self-design of the project teams. Additionally, old and non-agile IT-systems are organizational design aspects that hinder innovation’s creation. With regard to the implementation of innovation, unclear responsibilities, unfit IT-systems, a high level of functional concentration and specialization as well as a high separation of performance and control tasks are found to be hindering effective and efficient efforts.
