Abstract

The goal of this research is to get a better understanding of resource efficiency measures, in this case switching to greener suppliers of materials, and their impact on green growth within SMEs. This relationship will be moderated by governmental subsidies, which is seen in literature as the most effective way to get SMEs to grow in a greener way. Using a quantitative approach and the Eurobarometer 498 questionnaire, this research shows that there is no moderation effect of governmental subsidies. Governmental subsidies does not strengthen the relationship between resource efficiency and green growth. However, resource efficiency does have a significant effect on green growth. The conclusion can be drawn that SMEs do not see governmental subsidies as the primary resource to grow in a greener way. Therefore, future research must focus on trying other moderating variables in the model, to figure out which resources help SMEs best to eventually grow in a greener way and create a more green environment.
