Abstract

This thesis delves into the individual and combined impact of corruption, political instability, and crime on firm performance and their individual level of salience. Additionally, the extent to which firm size influences the relationships between the three factors and firm performance is examined. Using WBES data from 145 countries -119 developing countries and 26 developed countries - and 26,006 organisations, corruption, political instability, and crime were analysed to determine their impact on firm performance. A multiple regression analysis was performed to evaluate the research question. The results show that both corruption and crime individually have a negative impact on firm performance. Additionally, crime is a greater determinant of firm performance than corruption. The results also reveal that larger firm size weakens the relationship between the three factors and firm performance, thereby supporting previous literature and contributing to the field of International Business.
