Abstract
In 2006 John Hulsman and Anatol Lieven presented ethical realism as a viable alternative to U.S. foreign policy at the time. This thesis examines whether this alternative works by analyzing Barack Obama's foreign policy directions through case studies concerning Ukraine, Syria and nuclear non-proliferation.
This thesis aims to prove that ethical realism can and does work as a policy direction, but that the Great Capitalist Peace envisioned by Hulsman and Lieven is not a viable result because it is based on the assumption that nation-states will choose economic growth over security concerns.
