Abstract
In a fast-changing world where the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility is receiving more attention in business literature than ever, organisations are struggling with implementing sustainability in their business models. Nowadays, many organisations understand that something needs to be done when it comes to CSR engagement. The issue is rather how to implement CSR into their business model. The relation between different business models and the implementation of CSR initiatives is still rather underexposed, especially in the music festival industry. This might seem quite odd since music festivals have a significant stake in the Dutch economy in general. This master thesis focuses on engagement in implementing CSR practices and aims at identifying this influence in businesses. Furthermore, it is analysed how the implementation of CSR practices contributes to a more sustainable type of business model for music festivals.
The purpose of this master thesis is to explain people’s divergent perceptions of organisations’ corporate social responsibility practices to help festival organisers strategically manage their responsibilities, in the end, to contribute to a more sustainable type of business model. This research was conducted based on three research activities: 1) a literature study on CSR, CSR implementation, CSR engagement, Business Models, Sustainable Business Models, and CSR implementation in the Business Model, 2) a content analysis on publicly available documents, and 3) a qualitative multiple-case study is conducted by using semi-structured interviews on a sample, collected through purposive and snowball sampling, of 20 people working for Dutch music festival organisations.
