Abstract

This thesis was aimed at identifying the local traces of the VOC that can be found on Texel and amongst the local community of Oudeschild. To observe and locate the less represented or non-scientific traces of the VOC, a wide ranging method was employed based on Derrida’s hauntological framework. Derrida’s hauntology critiques the ontological framework and acknowledges the presence and influence of things that are between alive and dead, present and absent, or Being and non-Being. A series of qualitative approaches, consisting of interviews and field observations have resulted in an exceedingly diverse data set consisting of various physical traces and local narratives associated to the wider maritime narrative and landscape of Oudeschild. This research reveals the presently absence of hauntological traces and narratives in Oudeschild, concerning the VOC and other maritime narratives and identities. Furthermore, this research argues for locally authorized heritage actors to acknowledge alternative narratives and adopt these into the wider (maritime) discourse.
