Abstract

Environmentalism is a widely studied subject, mainly placed within the sixties and seventies. However, environmental art and specifically American art has been a less researched topic, even though its effects on environmental awareness are great. Art can play a role in influencing human behavior and can be used as a tool for public advocacy. This thesis will research exactly that and how environmental art, specifically, has served as a political tool for environmental awareness at the end of the nineteenth century (at the height of the conservation movement), during the sixties, and now. This thesis will do so based on three case studies centered in Utah from each time frame. Therefore, this thesis will explore several types of environmental art, such as representational art and landscape painting, nonrepresentational or performative art, earthworks, and climate change art.
