Abstract

This study examines the effect of big data analytics on organizational agility at five different Dutch energy suppliers and grid operators. After conducting seventeen interviews, it was found that big data analytics enhance organizational agility by improving responsiveness and cooperation. The use of big data analytics enables organizations to respond more quickly and efficiently to changes in their environment. In addition, the use of big data improves cooperation within an organization and with external partners. Data analysis uncovers responsibilities and is the foundation for effective cooperation. What appeared in this study is that this relationship is inhibited not only by infrastructural and technical factors but also by social factors. In addition, big data analytics has been found to be a difficult technology to implement that requires technical knowledge and time, and therefore can be expensive. Contributions are made to literature on big data analytics and organizational agility. First, this study uncovers the value of big data analytics. Second, this study contributes to the literature regarding organizational factors that complicate the potential of big data analytics. Third, it contributes to the literature on organizational capabilities that affect organizational agility. The influence of big data analytics as an information technology (IT) capability on organizational agility is elaborated.
