Abstract
Museums in the Netherlands are increasingly incorporating inclusivity and interaction within
their educational approach. As feminist pedagogies provide methods that reflect this shift,
this thesis explores how educational tools provided by Museum de Fundatie can be analyzed
through the lens of feminist pedagogies. Originally developed in a classroom setting, this
thesis uses feminist pedagogies as an analytical framework by analyzing the educational tools
provided by Museum de Fundatie for its exhibition ‘Fundatie Collectie: Remix’. To analyze
these educational tools an analytical framework was developed, focusing on the main
principles of feminist pedagogies: anti-hierarchical knowledge transmission, intersectionality,
personal experience and social change. An additional framework has been made to analyze
how the museum presents its exhibition within texts such as wall labels, examining voice,
language and visitor involvement. The materials analyzed include the museum’s vision on
education, the lay-out of the exhibition itself, the museum’s website, wall labels and guided
tours. These were supplemented by a semi-structured in depth interview with an employee of
the department of education of Museum de Fundatie. The analysis reveals that Museum de
Fundatie’s vision on education and its practices, particularly the use of Visual Thinking
Strategies and a non-hierarchical exhibition lay-out, are largely in line with the principles of
feminist pedagogies. However, certain elements in the wall labels risk reinforcing traditional
hierarchies. Moreover, Museum de Fundatie could improve the implementation of
intersectionality and has the potential to further encourage social change. Ultimately, this
thesis demonstrates that feminist pedagogies can function not only as an educational method
but also as an analytical framework to assess and potentially reimagine museum education in
a more inclusive and participatory way.
