Abstract

Dutch society has o-en been heralded as an exemplar mul6cultural society but has implemented increasingly restric6ve immigra6on measures over the years, resul6ng in the 6ghtest and most comprehensive migra6on policy hitherto. The research explores the link between framing, i.e. how immigrants and immigra6on are portrayed, and subsequent policy changes. This is conducted through a discourse analysis where the Dutch poli6cal Twi@er landscape is at subject. Social media plaCorms like X.com offer poli6cians a unique way to address the electorate in an easy, low-threshold manner, allowing them to directly influence how their audience perceives an issue like immigra6on. The results from this analysis are threefold. First, immigra6on as an issue has been further poli6cised over the years, allowing for the popularisa6on of the economic, managerial and threat frames besides the human-interest frame. Moreover, the discourse adopted a more nega6ve view on immigrants in general. Lastly, the agency of immigrants is con6nuously denied, o-en lumping immigrants with diverse backgrounds together, leaving them li@le room for self-advocacy.
