Abstract
In Nijmegen West, air quality is considered a problem. Industry and traffic produce high levels of emissions, which are harmful to the health of the people living in this area. The residents are aware of this problem, which resulted into attention in the media. Even the national news channel made an article about the specific case in Nijmegen West.
This Dutch article is about the impact of air quality on the quality of life of the inhabitants from Nijmegen West. The research was carried out using mixed methods in the form of a case study. For the quantitative analysis a survey was distributed among the residents. The qualitative analysis is based on interviews and policy documents of the municipality of Nijmegen.
Although the number of respondents was not very high, some interesting results came out of this research. It happens that women and respondents with complaints about physical health, mental health and odours tend to rate the quality of life in Nijmegen West significantly lower than men and respondents without these complaints.
To address this problem, the municipality has developed a number of measurements. These are divided into effect-based measurements and source-based measurements, both for the future and for the present. One solution is to measure and monitor emissions, while other options are more focused on reducing emissions in the air.
This study not only reveals the statistics of the survey but also provides the opinions of respondents in this area. Furthermore, a detailed explanation is added about history of air quality in Nijmegen, with information from the municipality of Nijmegen and professor dr. Pieter Leroy, who is specialized in environment studies.
