Abstract
Living small in a tiny house is an emerging urban lifestyle and a stronger becoming movement in the Netherlands. For about three years now, various initiatives and projects have occurred where people build and live in a tiny house. This research deals with the potential of this form of living as a future urban housing option. The focus lies on the active people on the ground that promote their form of living. Their organisation, communication and community are essential components that make a social movement viable so that it is taken seriously within the Dutch society. The Tiny House Movement shows that their online community is becoming ever larger, local initiatives exchange knowledge and expertise and there is a foundation in place that structures the movement. Additionally, political parties, various governmental institutions and local municipalities show a genuine interest in this lifestyle. This shows that the movement is becoming increasingly integrated in the Netherlands. Whilst legislative structures are not (yet) in place to support this form of housing, local municipalities as well as the people within the movement are actively working towards a future where tiny housing can be seen as a legitimate form of housing in urban areas.
