Abstract

Research about accent evaluation has shown that non-standard accent speakers are generally evaluated less positively than standard accent speakers. The research field about interventions to reduce accent discrimination is expanding but remains relatively unexplored. The current study researches whether the use of a disarming strategy by a speaker with a Randstad urban or regional urban accent can lead to a more positive evaluation by the listener. The study was set in a hiring context in which the speakers were evaluated on understandability, competence, status, dynamism and hireability. In an experiment, participants listened to audio files of Haags and Nijmeegs speakers who either used or did not use a disarming strategy. Findings showed that the disarming strategy did not result in more positive evaluations on various variables and that, over all, the Nijmeegs accent was evaluated as more standard and more positively than the Haags accent.
