Abstract

In recent years, the film industry has tried to increase representations of marginalized communities. Transgender characters (played by trans people) are among the groups of people that have been more present in the series. For trans people, having active relatable forms of representation is important to normalize trans identities as well as to bring visibility to the positive and negative lived experiences of trans people. Another effect those representations have is that many trans people feel a sense of belonging and shared identity with other trans people. To show how those trans representations in recent series result in the formation of a (North-Western) transatlantic trans community, this thesis analyzes both discourses around and trans character designs in three recent series (Heartstopper, Sense 8, and Elité).
