Abstract

The primary purpose of this qualitative media framing analysis is to investigate how the language of the framing of Syrian in 2015 and Ukrainian refugees in 2022 has contributed to the different treatments these groups have received in the Netherlands. This research will show how language in the frames gives different meanings to certain groups and how this creates a different perception of different people. By analysing more than one hundred articles from ‘de Telegraaf’, ‘de Volkskrant’ and ‘Algemeen Dagblad’, this research shows the variety of the framing of Syrian and Ukrainian refugees. Seven independent frames have been constructed during this research. Each frame contributes differently to how we see a particular group as ‘the other’. This research will also further elaborate on the negative consequences of ‘othering’ and what the role framing in othering is. I have concluded that the fear, criminalisation and dehumanisation frames mostly contribute to the negative treatment that Syrian refugees have gotten compared to Ukrainian refugees. Additionally, I have concluded that the different treatment is primarily based on racial preference and not on the commonly used sophisms.
