Abstract
This thesis investigates the ways in which the hip hop feminist movement challenges the conventional ways of representing black women and female sexuality in the contemporary American hip hop music industry.
In this thesis, I first trace the history of hip hop music and discuss the conventional ways black women and their sexuality have been represented in the American music industry. I then discuss two music videos, “WAP featuring Megan Thee Stallion” by Cardi B (2020) and “PYNK” by Janelle Monáe (2018), as contemporary examples that contribute to the hip hop feminist movement. In my analysis I discovered that by confronting the male gaze in music videos, use of subversive lyrics, and by using theoretical frameworks like postfeminsm and Afrofuturism, hip hop feminists are skillfully and creatively challenging the conventional ways of representation of black women and female sexuality.
