Abstract
This thesis focusses on motherhood and fatherhood in the Netherlands between 1960 and 2005. During the second half of the twentieth century various demographic, economic, social and cultural developments took place (i.e. declining fertility rates, women’s emancipation, individualization and rising economic welfare) influencing ideas and behavior of motherhood and fatherhood. In this thesis, a dual approach is used. First, ideals and representations in the women’s magazine Libelle and Jan, Jans en de Kinderen (JJK) comics were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative (frame analysis) methods. Next, personal understanding and experiences of mothers were explored using oral history. This thesis aims to (1) trace the development of the portrayal and framing of mothers and fathers in Libelle and JJK, (2) explore how Libelle readers thought about Libelle and JJK and perceived their influence, specifically regarding motherhood and fatherhood, and (3) examine personal conceptualizations and experiences of them regarding motherhood and fatherhood.
