Abstract
Little Women is one of those classic texts which can be reinterpreted every time it gets adapted, mostly because it is highly ambiguous as it contains progressive as well as traditional elements. Some scholars have condemned an adaptation of Little Women from 1994 for creating a damaging mythical feminist depiction of the female struggles of the nineteenth century. However, this criticism is not in line with the current ideas on fidelity in adaptation theory and with the postmodern perspectives on the fictionality of historical constructs. Therefore, this thesis set out to provide an alternative way of analysing adaptations of Little Women while looking into the most recent adaptation by Greta Gerwig from 2019. The main purpose of this work was to find out how Greta Gerwig has dealt with the ambiguity of the original text in her adaptation of Little Women. To this purpose, this thesis analyses how the central sentimental theme of marriage and the progressive theme of the working woman are depicted in her adaptation compared to the novel.
