Abstract

In Hassan Fazili’s documentary Midnight Traveler (2019, Hassan, Fatima, and their two daughters, Nargis and Zahra, are forced to flee their home. Capturing the journey, the Fazili family shows the dangers facing refugees seeking asylum and the love shared between a family on the run. Homeliness and lack of shelter are important aspects throughout their journey. In the film, they stay in three different refugee camps in Bulgaria, Serbia, and Hungary, where they attempt to create a sense of homeliness. This thesis analyses the main aspects of homeliness practiced in the refugee camps and whether safety plays a big role. It discusses three important aspects of homeliness seen in the film: safety, privacy, and familiarity. Moreover, safety is often a central theme of the film because the family encounters many challenges. So, how does one practice homeliness in a situation that is the opposite of home (fleeing, journey)? In my thesis, I attempted to analyze how the family practices homeliness through safety, privacy, and familiarity.
