Abstract

In the Netherlands private funded museums are emerging alongside the public funded museums. Besides this, for the public funded museums, private funding seems to get a complementary role in addition to the public funding. This requires a different organizational design within cultural institutions. Because private funders have other motives and interests for financing museums, these museums have to take into account different wishes they must serve when they want to maintain the relationship with their funders. In addition to the literature that underpinned the idea that funders influence the way museums execute their tasks, this master thesis will pay attention to the differences that show up in practice concerning the artistic as well as the business operations. The comparison is carried out based on two cases, one entirely private funded museum, namely Museum De Pont in Tilburg and one mostly public funded museum, namely the Central Museum in Utrecht.
