Abstract

In the last decade experience-based tourism and dark tourism have been becoming increasingly popular. Edinburgh in particular is known for its dark atmosphere and ghost walks where people get to experience "real" haunted places. This thesis explores how ghost walks conducted in the Old Town mobilize the area's haunting atmosphere through embodied practices; and how this atmosphere relates to the commodification of heritage sites. The subject of atmosphere is theoretically tackled through the lens of the non-representational theory and Latour’s actor-network theory. The case study data is presented in the form of self-conducted semi-structured interviews with guides and questionnaires filled in by attendants. The theoretical actor network scheme is then applied to the corpus of qualitative data to trace the elements of Edinburgh's haunting atmosphere and "intra-actions" between human and non-human actors.
