Abstract

Sustainable waste management strategies are being developed to address growing environmental problems, but while these strategies have found some acceptance in high-income countries, they are hardly implemented in low-income countries. To improve waste management systems in these regions, it is necessary to understand the waste process. Since the problem is most urgent in cities, this research focuses on Municipal Solid Waste Management strategies. The behaviour of local residents plays a crucial role in these strategies. It is assumed that this behaviour can be influenced, but relatively little is known about the motivation behind it. This thesis explores the behaviour of local residents in low-income neighbourhoods involved in waste management programs, and specifically, the inhabitants of Tambak Lorok, a low-income neighbourhood in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. A qualitative approach was used, including interviews with residents and NGO employees. The outcome shows that many factors influence behaviour. Most management systems assume a linear relationship between environmental awareness and behaviour, but this research shows that economic incentives and social motives are at least as important. These findings highlight the need for tailor-made waste management strategies per location and target group.
