Abstract

English is increasingly used as a corporate language in Dutch businesses, meaning non-native speakers communicate with each other in English. The purpose of this study was to analyse the effects of Dutch-accented English on Dutch listeners in the employment context. In an experiment, participants were asked to evaluate speech samples of moderate, slight Dutch-accented and British English speakers who applied for either an IT or HR position. Thereby, the influences of accentedness and communicative demands of the job position were investigated. The results are not completely in line with findings of previous studies in which moderately accented speakers were perceived more negatively compared to slightly accented and British English speakers, and no significant differences between slight Dutch-accented and British English speakers were found.
