Abstract
Disney films are considered as having a profound influence since contemporary popular culture and many generations have been inspired by Disney films. Although Disney has always claimed to be progressive towards gender and sexuality in their animated classics from the 90s, the films still contain traditional gender roles which are portrayed as being progressive. In this research, a comparative analysis will be conducted, which will focus on the gender roles and portrayal of sexuality in Disney films. The animated classics Beauty & the Beast (1991) and Aladdin (1992) will be compared to their live-action remakes from 2017 and 2019 to draw distinctions and similarities between them. By analysing the films it will become apparent whether Disney has made progress in their live-action remakes or if they continue to use traditional gender roles and stereotypical portrayals of sexuality.
