Abstract
During the course of their lives, almost everyone experiences disruptive private life events which to a greater or lesser extent influence someone’s engagement and performance at work. Because managers can also influence a person's engagement and performance at work, it is important that they are aware of the type of leadership they are applying. This research examines the influence of family supportive supervisor behaviour on employee engagement and performance. In addition, it looks at the influence of experiencing disruptive private life events on engagement and examines how family supportive supervisor behaviour affects this relationship. Family supportive supervisor behaviour is expected to have a positive influence on employee performance and engagement. Further, it is expected that disruptive private life events have a negative influence on a person's commitment but that family supportive supervisor behaviour reduces this negative relationship. Quantitative data was collected via an online survey which resulted in a sample of 126 participants. The results of this research indicate that family supportive supervisor behaviour has a positive influence on both the performance and engagement of employees. Contrary to expectations, the disruptiveness of private life events did not negatively affect the engagement of employees. However, it was found that family supportive supervisor behaviour significantly influences the relationship between disruptive private life events and engagement; the higher the degree of family supportive supervisor behaviour, the higher the engagement of the employee.
