Abstract
The topic of this thesis is representations of American road trips. The concept of the road and road trips has been a part of American history for a long time and many different types of media have portrayed this phenomenon, among them Jack Kerouac and Bruce Springsteen. Kerouac’s On the Road and Springsteen’s “Born to Run” are both famous works in the road genre. On the Road has inspired many Americans to take to the road and “Born to Run” is considered to be one of the best road trip songs there is.
While looking at these case studies, I focus on three main key concepts: freedom, identity, and the American Dream. These concepts are featured prominently in the case studies, although not in exactly the same manner, which means they lend themselves well for a comparison relating these concepts. The research question is the following: How are the key concepts of American road trips portrayed in Jack Kerouac’s On the Road and Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” and how do these representations compare to each other?
