Abstract
This thesis has aimed to determine how the subgroups of the online, anti-feminist masculinist movement called the manosphere have embraced or rejected expressions of hegemonic masculinity. These subgroups are Men’s Rights Activists, Men Going Their Own Way, Involuntary Celibates, and Pickup Artists. By incorporating evidence provided by written and/or audiovisual forms of material by prominent members of each subcommunity, this thesis has shown that, while many of the core tenets of these subcommunities are still rooted in the ideas of hegemonic masculinity, each of the subcommunities engages in a strategy of applying hybrid masculinity to further legitimize their rhetoric. They do this to point out how, according to them, both historically and in the modern age, men are being oppressed by a system of feminist gynocentrism.
