Abstract

Emerging adulthood is characterized by many life changes, one of which is the growing importance of attachment to a romantic partner. However, attachment to parents remains significant. This research studies attachment to the mother figure and the father figure separately and investigates its predictive value on communication withdrawal to the romantic partner in emerging adults (18 - 25 years, 160 Dutch participants). It is hypothesized that the avoidance dimension of attachment will predict high levels of communication withdrawal, mainly when it is measured in attachment to the mother. This study also tests a possible multiplication in predictive strength of insecure attachment to mother and the father by testing interaction. Results from a hierarchical regression analysis show significant predictive value of attachment on communication withdrawal (p = .002), but only a small explained variance (R2 = .123) and no significant interaction effect. Future research should include an interpersonal approach to attachment and take the attachment style to the current romantic partner into account.
