Abstract
Natural conversation is characterised by rapid turn-taking. Previous studies (Bögels et al.,
2015; 2018) have found that this rapid turn-taking may be possible because response planning
starts as soon as possible. The present study aimed to replicate their finding that response
planning starts as soon as possible with a group of participants varying in age. Furthermore, we
aimed to find out whether individual differences in speed of production and comprehension is
related to turn-taking speed. We were able to replicate a large positive ERP effect following
critical information required to start planning a response, which suggests that response
planning also starts early in a group of participants varying in age. We found that the degree to
which individual differences in the speed of language production and comprehension relate to
turn-taking response times depends on multiple factors. The complex interactions we found
between language production, comprehension, turn-taking and age group may be a reflection
of the complex relationship between comprehension and production processes in turn-taking.
We conclude that response planning starts as soon as possible in a group of participants varying
in age and turn-taking speed is related to individual differences in both language
comprehension speed and language production speed.
