Abstract

The world is becoming more globalised, which creates a diverse work environment. To deal with this globalised work environment and stay competitive, managers must guide diverse teams and actively create an inclusive environment. An inclusive environment increases employees’ efficiency and productivity and improves collaboration between teams. Based on the rising importance of the concepts of inclusion and inclusive leadership, this study examined how top and middle managers use inclusive leadership behaviours to foster inclusion in culturally diverse work environments. A qualitative approach was used with an embedded single case study. The data was collected through ten semi-structured interviews with top and middle managers from the multinational company Nuvia. The results show that most of the managers are not familiar with the concept of inclusive leadership, and there is no clear communication about inclusion within the organisation. Additionally, there is not only a difference between cultures, but also between people within the cultures. The main cultural difference is between regions like Asia, Africa, and Europe. Employees feel important and valuable to the company when employees are included in decision-making from the beginning, although this is not the same in every culture.
