Abstract
Abstract
Apathy is one of the most prominent neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with ‘uncomplicated’ Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), alcohol related cognitive impairments (ARCI) and Korsakoff’s syndrome (KS). Besides, there is increasing evidence for apathy as a multidimensional concept. In this, a distinction is made between cognitive apathy, emotional apathy and behavioural apathy. However, less is known about these apathy subtypes in patients with alcohol related problems. This study aimed to investigate the relation between cognitive, emotional and social apathy ratings and measures of cognitive-executive function, emotional processing and social functioning. This study was done in AUD (N=23), ARCI (N=18) and KS (N=9) patients and a control group (N=20). Apathy subtypes were measured with the Apathy Motivation Index (AMI). Besides, cognitive-executive functioning was measured using the Brixton Spatial Anticipation Test (BSAT), emotion recognition was measured using the Emotion Recognition Task (ERT) and knowledge of social norms was measured using the Social Norms Questionnaire (SNQ). Higher ratings of cognitive, emotional and social apathy were found for the control group compared to AUD and ARCI patients. In addition, no significant linear regression model was found for cognitive, emotional and social apathy with the BSAT, ERT and SNQ score as variables of interest. This study shows that apathy symptoms of apathy are present in the patient groups, but also more in the control group. Besides, no association was found between the apathy subtypes and executive functioning, emotion recognition and social norms.
