Abstract

In this paper I look at the function of the character Anansi in the Dutch children’s TV-series Anansi de Spin. The TV-series is based on Anansi stories, which first emerged in oral storytelling-traditions of Ghana and its neighboring areas. The West-African diaspora that was initially caused by the transatlantic slave-trade caused these stories to spread out to other locations, under which Suriname, where the stories became a source of protest to the enslaved peoples. The adaptable nature of the character is of great importance for the research. By analyzing multiple episodes of Anansi de Spin through theories of postcolonial and decolonial thinkers such as Paul Gilroy and Gloria Wekker and Aníbal Quijano, this research investigates whether the TV-series is reflective of the attitude the Netherlands has towards its colonial past.
