Abstract

This paper focuses on examining the degree to which the foreign language effect (FLE) is present in written communication about climate change, with Dutch (native language) and English (second language). Moreover, the study considers the distinction between an emotional and factual message type. In an online experiment with a between-subjects design, Dutch-English bilinguals were shown one message with either an emotional or factual appeal in their native or second language. They were asked to answer questions regarding their attitude, their behavioral intention and the emotionality of the message. The findings show that, in written communication about climate change, the appeal type and the language used do not have different persuasive effects for the bilinguals. Even though participants perceived the emotional message as more emotional than the factual message, it had no persuasive impact.
