Abstract

Within this exploratory research the role of film in Dutch high school (havo/vwo) literature education is examined. Both in the literary field and in adaptation studies film takes in an interesting position. From subject didactic view more and more voices are rising to give film a place in literature education. However, not much is known about the practice. In this research high school teachers and students were asked about their experiences with and opinions about film in literature education. In the first online survey 159 teachers were asked about their use of film in literature education. In the second and third survey respectively 77 teachers and 167 students were asked about their experiences and opinions about film in literature education via an online survey with theses. They also had room to explicate their answers. We can conclude that films play a significant role in literature education. Both teachers and students are positive about this practice. They see film as a welcome variance in their lessons and film is being seen as a part of literature, that is worthy of paying attention to. They thereby conclude that film can help clarify narratology aspects and therefor is useful in literature education.
