Abstract

This research sought out to examine the influence of Resource Rents, Institutional Quality and R&D on the growth in Renewable Energy Production. Furthermore, it is estimated how these relationships differentiate for different levels of per capita income. By making use of a fixed effects panel data analysis, the period 2005 to 2020 is studied. The latest available data is used, which makes this research a valuable update to the literature on a highly relevant topic. The results indicate that the relationship between Resource Rents and the growth in Renewable Energy Production gets decreasingly negative as per capita income increases. For high-income countries this relationship even becomes positive. With these results it is recommended that policy is made focusing on improvement of institutions, granting them the ability to transform resource revenues into sustainable ends such as Renewable Energy Production. Such institutions should make long-term oriented decisions and avoid myopic behaviour. No clear results were found for both the Institutional Quality and R&D variables. Future research could delve deeper into the promising leads this research does find for these variables. Moreover, it could also take the limitations of this research into account, by getting access to more complete and adequate data.
