Abstract
The rise of the fourth industrial revolution has affected organizations as well as their employees. Industry 4.0 technologies such as digitalization and robotization are transforming manufacturing organizations. These technologies lead to the demand for new skills and knowledge among blue-collar workers. The implementation of technological changes can be challenging for blue-collar workers. Leaders can support their employees by facilitating this technology adoption. This study aims to discover how leadership behavior facilitates the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies among blue-collar workers. This is researched by means of a multiple, comparative case study. The data is collected through interviews and observations in four organizations. The findings reveal several leadership behaviors and ways of facilitating technology adoption in the organizations in this research. It shows how the context of the organization and Industry 4.0 technology determine the leadership behavior. This research found several important contextual factors, for instance type of organization, employee attitude and phase of technology implementation that impact the behavior of a leader. Furthermore, it becomes evident how the type of leadership behavior affects the way in which the technology adoption is facilitated.
