Abstract

How do Oxfam Novib, Save the Children and OCHA look at the relationship between climate change, displacement and conflict. Ethiopia is very vulnerable for the effects of climate change, due to its dependency on agriculture. In past the country experienced more frequent, intense and prolonged droughts, also floodings took place. These are seen a direct effect of climate change, which have caused major problems, mainly concerning water and food provisions. This issue challenges NGO’s in Ethiopia, they call it a humanitarian disaster. This creates more instability, which creates higher risk for conflict. By comparing the documentations of NGO’s and the literature, there is more insight in how these concepts relate to each other in Ethiopia. The organisations have similar views on how to deal with the effects of climate change and share some projects together. OCHA is also creating more structural changes with the Ethiopian government to prevent famine and other disasters. All organisations fear that climate change will increase, this will create more displacement and disputes over land, food and water. Because of low inter-group solidarity, with a high level of scarcity, the situation is alarming. NGO’s call for changes to help people for the longer term, this situation is not sustainable.
