Abstract
Even though operetta has been a hugely popular genre in nineteenth-century Amsterdam, the genre has never been fully appreciated in Dutch historiography. Its influence on Dutch society has only partly been acknowledged by historians who have focused mostly on its popularity in the early 1860s, the time when Jacques Offenbach first gained popularity in the Netherlands. However, the genre was much more influential than this research suggests. This thesis therefore seeks to research the genre in more detail and over a larger time span, finding out more about its meanings to audiences in Amsterdam from 1865 until 1885.
