Abstract

Retention of employees is very important for organizations to prevent employee shortages and to save costs for newly hiring personnel. Research has shown that job resources like supervisor support have an effect on the intention to stay. Therefore, t he aim of the study was to investigate the mediating role of work engagement between job resources and the intention to stay in an organization. Based on the literature, the JDR model was used as a basis Further more work engagement was hypothesized as the mediator between job resources and intention to stay. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire and distributed on a voluntary basis in a pharmaceutical corporate organization a mong ( apprentices in this organization. The study sample consisted of 108 employees of six apprenticeship programs from the organization. These included technicians, warehouse logistics, wholesale and foreign trade and IT specialists. The results s howed that work engagement acts as a mediator between perceived supervisor support and intention to stay and career possibilities. Learning opportunities is associated significantly with intention to stay whereas r emuneration is not associated significantl y with intention to stay. Previous research found several significant effects. A limitation of the study was that it was a non experimen tal study and therefore no conclusions can be drawn about causal relationships. An implication is to pay more attention on learning opportunities and work engagement with regard to retention of employees. Keywords: JDR model, retention of apprentices, work engagement
