Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of the communication modes English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and Receptive Multilingualism (RM) in e-mail communication. An experiment with 16 mixed German-Dutch dyads was conducted. Each dyad solved two jigsaw tasks, one in ELF and one in RM. Both communication modes were shown to be equally effective. However, participants perceived the commonly used ELF mode as more effective than the probably unfamiliar RM. Regarding the use of communication strategies, no differences between ELF and RM were found. The results suggest that RM might be a valuable alternative to ELF in German-Dutch e-mail communication. The results suggest that despite of the clear dominance of ELF in international business communication, alternative communication modes such as RM should be considered.
