Abstract

In the last few decades, there has been increasing attention to both gender equality and decolonization in museums and museum studies. Although these topics have in general been approached seperatly from each other, there are various intersections in regards to representation and structural inequality in the context of museums. This research brings these two topics together by analysing museum practices through a postcolonial feminist lens. The research is specifically focused at the practices of Museum Arnhem, a museum of modern and contemporary art in the city of Arnhem in the Netherlands. This research unpacks the museum’s varying practices surrounding diversity, inclusivity and decoloniality. These practices were all implemented in the context of the setup of a new, strongly feminist exhibition on nudity in the art: Museum Arnhem Goes Naked. Applying a postcolonial feminist lens in my research allowed for a critical understanding of some of the artworks included in the exhibition and of the museum’s practices in preparation for the exhibition. This led to some insightful findings on postcolonial feminism and decoloniality in museums.
