Abstract
This research contains an examination on the governance of area-based initiatives within Dutch environmental health planning through the National Liveability and Safety Programme (NLSP) in reducing health and liveability inequalities in socioeconomically deprived areas. ABIs have been criticised on their effectiveness. Nevertheless, ABIs remain the dominant policy approach. Consequently, the governance structures behind the development of ABIs have been examined and debated. However, further empirical evidence is required to identify the opportunities and barriers inherent in the policy formulation and implementation processes of ABIs. Therefore, this research provided more empirical insights on the nature of Dutch environmental health planning through the NLSP. This research reveals that if this approach place greater emphasis on enhancing citizen involvement, maintaining a level playing field and facilitating more flexibility in local policy processes, it could prove to be a promising approach for reducing health inequalities in socioeconomically deprived areas.
