Abstract

Recently, the topic of social safety became important here at Radboud University, following the news about our previous rector being guilty of transgressive behaviour and his decision to quit due to this. The issue of social safety in academia seems structural rather than an isolated problem. In this thesis, I explore what makes academia such a suitable place for social unsafety to occur. I do this by using the method of system dynamics and using its related feedback perspective. System dynamics is a method of research in which we study complex systems and their structural behaviour. The objective of this research is to develop a causal loop diagram that describes the multiple causalities that cause structural social unsafety for female researchers in academia at Radboud University, in order to give recommendations to directors at universities for improving social safety in academia. The research question that is central here is: What are the feedback processes that cause structural social safety for female researchers in academia at Radboud University? In order to answer the research question, I interviewed members of Radboud University about their experiences with social safety on campus. From these interviews, I updated the preliminary causal loop diagram, derived from the literature on the topic, which depicts the causalities that interact to create transgressive behaviour.
