Abstract

According to the free energy principle, organisms are continuously reducing the amount of unregulated interactions with their environment. Scientist at VERSES are working on designing artificial systems based on the free energy principle. They claim that this would lead to truly curious artificial intelligence. In this paper, I challenge that claim. I aim to show that while the free energy principle necessitates humans to be curious, this is contingent on the specifics of our evolutionary niche. As Humans, we have a lot of inherent uncertainty about how we need to act in order for our bodies to survive, leading to curiosity. In contrast, most artificial systems do not need to act on their environment in order to survive.
